Adult ADHD in Pune: where to start when you suspect it

First steps for adults in Pune who suspect ADHD. What to write down, who to see first, what treatment really involves, and what to skip.

Before you book anything

You’ve been wondering for a while. Maybe a video hit too close, maybe your report cards all said the same thing, maybe you’re 34 and still can’t file anything on time. The question is real. Fifteen minutes of prep makes the answer cheaper and better.

Write down the pattern, not the bad week. Doctors assess long-running patterns that show up everywhere in your life. So list them: the abandoned projects, the deadline panics, the taxes late every single year, the books you can only read at 2am. One burnt-out quarter isn’t a pattern. Twenty years of the same shape might be.

Dig up childhood evidence. ADHD starts in childhood even when nobody named it. Old report cards, a parent’s memory, a sibling who’ll say what you were like at nine. Our assessment guide explains why this matters so much.

Do a self-screener, cheaply. Free structured questionnaires exist. They answer exactly one question: is a proper assessment worth booking? That’s all. Don’t let one diagnose you either way.

Things that look like ADHD and aren’t

Any decent assessment (NICE’s NG87 guideline sets the standard most clinicians follow) checks for the impostors first:

  • Depression and anxiety. Both wreck concentration.
  • Sleep problems. Chronic sleep deprivation is ADHD’s best impersonator.
  • Thyroid issues. A blood test settles it.
  • Plain overload. A new parent working two jobs doesn’t have a disorder of attention. They have two jobs and a baby.

Here’s the reframe worth keeping: if the assessment says “this isn’t ADHD, it’s your sleep”, you didn’t waste the fee. You just found the actual problem.

Two doors in Pune, and both are fine

Door one: a psychiatrist. Pick this if medication is something you realistically want assessed, if things are severe, or if you’d rather have diagnosis and treatment with one person. Psychiatrists are medical doctors and the only route to a prescription. Verified ones are listed for Pune and PCMC.

Door two: a clinical psychologist. Pick this if what you mainly want is clarity, a formal written report, or to start with therapy. Check for a real RCI registration (five-minute how-to in our verification guide). Verified ones are listed for Pune and PCMC.

There’s no wrong door. They refer to each other constantly. The only wrong move is starting with a confident Instagram account instead of a verified professional.

What treatment actually looks like

Not “take a pill, become a new person”. Real adult ADHD care mixes three things in whatever proportion fits you:

  • Scaffolding. Externalise your memory and your time. Calendars, alarms, visible lists, one notebook. Boring. Load-bearing.
  • Structured therapy or coaching. CBT-based skills work aimed at planning, emotional regulation and the self-esteem damage from decades of “just try harder”. Typically a run of 8 to 16 sessions.
  • Medication, for many people. Prescribed and monitored by a psychiatrist, reviewed regularly. It changes what’s possible; the scaffolding is what makes it stick.

Your first sixty days, realistically

  • Week 1: write the pattern down. Do a screener.
  • Week 2: shortlist two or three verified providers whose fees, languages and mode fit your life. Profiles show all three, honestly, including online options.
  • Weeks 3 to 6: first consultation. Maybe a second. Maybe testing.
  • By day 60: either a diagnosis and the start of a plan, or a clear alternative explanation and a different plan.

Both outcomes beat another year of wondering. Book the appointment.

Frequently asked questions

I did well in school. Can I still have ADHD as an adult?

Yes. Plenty of adults coasted through school on intelligence or a parent's scaffolding, then hit a wall when life demanded self-organisation. Assessment looks for early signs, and early signs are not the same thing as early failure.

Are online ADHD tests worth anything?

As a nudge, yes. As an answer, no. A self-screener can tell you whether a real assessment is worth booking. It can't diagnose anything, and a high score has plenty of other explanations. Use it as a reason to book, never as a result.

Should an adult see a psychiatrist or a psychologist first in Pune?

If medication is realistically on the table, start with a psychiatrist. One person can then diagnose and prescribe. If what you want is clarity, a written report, or therapy, an RCI-registered clinical psychologist is just as good an entry point. Each refers to the other all the time.

How do I bring this up without being dismissed as following a trend?

Bring the pattern, not the label. Concrete examples going back years, what they've cost you at work and at home, and if possible someone who knew you as a child. Doctors respond to patterns. A good one won't care what's trending.
